The Chicago Blitz were one of the charter members of the in 1983, and were championship favorites behind hall of fame head coach George Allen. After blowing a 21-point playoff lead the team was sold. The new owner refused to pay big contracts and in the biggest trade in sports history, traded all their players and coaching staff with the . Another hall of fame coach Marv Levy was hired, but it wasn't enough. The new Blitz team finished in last place while the Wranglers went to the championship with their former players. Angry fans stopped attending games and the Blitz folded at the end of the 1984 season.
