The Houston Gamblers were one of six expansion teams awarded by the for the 1984 season, the league's second. The Gamblers two-year run would be remembered most for the terrific play of future great Jim Kelly and the debut of the "run & shoot'' offensive scheme in professional football. With long time pro football head coach Jack Pardee serving as head coach, and the innovative Mouse Davis at offensive coordinator, their explosive offense became well known throughout football. The established league's teams soon adopted the same offense, including the who shared the Gamblers' stadium. The Gamblers also were the first team to use a no huddle offense outside of a two-minute drill. In 2022, the name was revived by the new USFL. When that league merged with the new XFL in 2024 to form the UFL, Houston was included, but the new league opted to use the nickname of Houston's XFL team, the Roughnecks.
