The original Michigan Panthers, charter members of the in 1983, appeared in the first ever professional football game to be broadcast on national cable TV when they took on the on March 7, 1983. The largest USFL crowd on record (60,200) was on hand when the Panthers defeated the for the league's Western Division Championship behind the leadership of rookie quarterback Bobby Hebert.
