After starting off as the Los Angeles Sharks in 1972, a charter member of the , the newly named Michigan Stags hoped to compete for fans with the long struggling Red Wings in the fall of 1974. The Stags unfortunately ended up being much worse. Despite signing former Red Wing Johnny Wilson as coach, few knew they existed due largely to only having one game shown on local TV. Ownership moved the team to Maryland to become the midway through the season for a fresh start. With the new Washington Capitals in close by in D.C., however, ownership decided to discontinue the Blades after the season.
