The original Portland Mavericks were owned by actor Bing Russell (father of Kurt) and were the final independent team in minor league baseball. From holding open tryouts, to lighting brooms on fire, the Mavericks were known for outrageous antics and promotions. The team won division titles in four of their five seasons and became so hated by the league that organizations would often demote their better players to play against the Mavericks.
