The San Antonio Gunslingers were one of the six expansion teams that started playing in the in 1984, the league's second season. They were best known for their strong defense nicknamed "The Bounty Hunters." Off the field, however the Gunslingers were more known for financial problems. In the documentary Small Potatoes: Who Killed the USFL? players tell the story about how they would literally race each other to the bank, Cannonball Run-style, to cash their paychecks, knowing half of them would bounce. The franchise was eventually revoked by the league when the owner stopped paying bills, though they did make it to the end of what would be the USFL's last season in 1985.
