The Steelheads were owned by Harlem Globetrotters founder Abe Saperstein. Saperstein moved most of the players from his Harlem Globetrotters baseball team to play competitive baseball for the Steelheads in the West Coast Negro Baseball League. Jesse Owens often traveled with the team to race against people and horses as entertainment between innings. The team had plans to also play home games in various cities throughout Washington before the league folded. Afterwards, the players went back to traveling the country as the Harlem Globetrotters baseball team.
