Jacques Demers coached the Racers for two seasons, resulting in playoff appearances both years. With a WHA/NHL merger on the horizon, ownership became concerned with merging the Racers into the NHL. After unsuccessfully attempting to move to Canada, the team signed players to huge contracts they could not afford. Most notably a 17 year old Wayne Gretzky was signed to one of the largest hockey contracts in history. The team folded 25 games into the 1978-79 season due to financial problems.

Notable Players:

  • Wayne Gretzky
  • Mark Messier
